How to Calculate How Much Material You Need
To figure out how much bulk material (mulch, gravel, soil, sand, or compost) you need:

Measure the length and width of the area you plan to cover (in feet).

Multiply length × width to get the area in square feet.

Multiply that square footage by your desired depth (in inches ÷ 12 to convert to feet).

Divide the total cubic feet by 27 to convert to cubic yards — because 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.
Example: A 10 ft × 15 ft garden bed at 3″ depth →
10 × 15 = 150 sq ft
150 × (3 ÷ 12) = 37.5 cubic ft
37.5 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.39 cubic yards
